Every time a teacher catches a student committing an infraction (something they're not supposed to do) they issue them one or more demerits. Game suspensions mean that you have to miss your next game.
After that you're venturing into expulsion territory, and no one wants to go there.

16 demerits = 3 game suspensions
20 demerits = 4 game suspensions
25 demerits = 5 game suspensions = 1 school suspension
